Talk with our seniors about real community service. Should be completed outside with community partners and not only with teachers.
There should be accountability for community service hours (report card)

GRADE GROUP ESSENTIAL DISCUSSION/QUESTIONS
Dr. Pedro Nogurea discusses technical versus adaptive work. Technical work is the routine sensible things we do in schools on a daily basis. Adaptive work has substance, meaning and purpose. It is about the culture we create in changing our environment. Adaptive work is done proactively and is based on reflection. In schools we must achieve a balance between technical vs. adaptive work. With this in mind, use the following questions to determine what we want to be and what does it take to educate the children you serve?
Key Adaptive Questions:
How do children/young adults learn?
All young adults learn differently - according to their multiple intelligences. They learn in whole groups, pairs, individually, and small groups while incorporating differentiated instruction. If students cannot make connections with what they are learning, the material is not considered meaningful to them.
How do/will they use literacy and math in a global environment?
Because of the global economy, literacy and math are extremely important. Students should make cross cultural connections to all the material. They need to understand things globally in order to compete in this society and within the job market.
What are your students interested in? How do we find out?
Students are interested in most things that incorporate multimedia. They are interested in things that they perceive are relevant to their own lives. We can find out by the students input and careful teacher observation of how they interact.
How are we going to use this information to develop our programs and instructional strategies?
As we watch students' interactions, we can assess how programs and lessons can be written and delivered within the classroom. All teachers should be able make modifications as needed.
What challenges do students and their parents face?
In thinking of Maslow's hierarchy of need, teachers must first ask if the students have all of the basic needs. Some of our students come from environments that negate their most essential needs. We, in turn, have to support those needs in the school community before learning can begin. Many of our students are incapable of fulfilling the technological requirements that are required for them to use at home to complete assignments. Many parents face economical challenges and cannot therefore be vigilant in attending to their child's direct academic needs.
What are their needs that may impact learning?
All students would benefit from differentiated instruction. However, aforementioned, if the students' basic needs are not addressed, very limited learning will take place. Once those basic needs are addressed, other needs stem from socio-emotional challenges and/or special needs (physical, mental, verbal, etc.)
What are their dreams and aspirations? How do we find out?
Many of the students want to attend college, have more opportunities to leave their neighborhood, and see things that they have never seen before. As teachers we should keep in mind that upward mobility is important to a great number of students.
If knowledge is power how do we make it relevant?
The first thing that is needed is for educators to realize there must be some sort of "buy-in" in order for students to vest in their own education. Some students do not intrinsically understand the relevance of the importance within their own education. Many of the students believe college and economical stability - the means to an end - will serve as a tool for their advancement in society.
What does the data tell you about your students?
The data tells you about the students' basics skills levels (primarily literacy, math, and attendance). It may also tell whether or not they are good or struggling test-takers. Those students who are serious versus those who are not can also be assessed through the data. Data will also tell a teacher where he/she may need to reteach a skill, especially when there isn't 80% accuracy.
How do our students take control over their learning?
Some students are intrinsically motivated, but for those that are not, teachers and parents should teach the students how to take control over their learning. Many students lack the communication skills necessary to ensure their own success. When they learn how to communicate some of their needs as individuals, they will have taken the first steps towards controlling their learning. Active learning and participation are key.
How do we talk to our students?
Talk to the students with the same respect that you would want them to speak to you. Teachers should continue to emphasize high expectations for students.
How do we talk to our parents?
One should try to find the "happy medium" between what the parents know and what they may and with what they may be unfamiliar. In this way, teachers will not belittle the intelligence of their parents. Approaching parents with the understanding that we all want what is best for their child.
How are we going to better connect to our community?
We already have great community partnership, however, we should utilize their services a little more. Because our students have to complete community service requirements, we could perhaps partner with these organizations in that manner.

SENIOR TEAM MEETING Dr. Bailey, Mr. Martin, Mr. Kane
1) How do children/young adults learn?
The students learn in Groups. They are more considerate than former students
Seminar with all the students would also seem helpful.
Students offer more insight in class and are more motivated, but need more guidance and hand-holding. They need to be taught how to learn in groups from each other and to value the opinions of others. They don’t trust each other’s opinions.
3) Students interest?
The students are interested in world news and in their opinions being heard. They want to be recognized, and they want to know how to improve and go to the next level - to do better. They always perk up when you tell them how the lesson will apply to their everyday lives.
4) How are we going to use this information to develop our programs and instructional strategies?
The following are different ideas that the group believe will help to foster the success of our 12th graders:
*Augment the areas where students are not very strong
*Make instruction meaningful
*Differentiate without negating the tools they need to succeed in college
*Help our students to develop the social skills to succeed in college (seminar approach)
*We should set measurable goals by December because we will have had the opportunity to know what each student needs.

10/29/10Senior grade group I am not seeing any postings. Am I looking in the right place? You must do what I have asked you to do.

GRADE GROUP
ESSENTIAL DISCUSSION/QUESTIONS

SENIOR TEAM MEETING
Dr. Bailey, Mr. Martin, Mr.
